Austrian red cabbage recipe

Hello Globetrotters,

with the Holidays around us I got a little homesick last week but not because I miss my family, no I missed the food from back home. The first thing that came to my mind was cabbage but as it is always with us women we can’t decide on one thing. So it happened when I went to the market that I bought the ingredients for cooking two whole heads of white and red cabbage. Wasn’t that much I had to buy because most ingredients we always have at home.

Even I knew I had a crazy busy day ahead I decided to cook it that day. I fed the kids with snacks after school and gave them some little tasks to do.

Austrian Red Cabbage Recipe

Preparation time: 20 min / Cooking time: 1 1/2 hour / Servings: 4 portions
  • 1 green apple
  • 1 red cabbage
  • 1 red onion
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1/2 cup apple juice
  • 1 tsp butter
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • salt & pepper & garlic

Start with cutting the cabbage in small thin pieces and put them for now in a big bowl. After peal and cut the apple and the onion in small pieces. Put them both in different bowls and put aside.

In a big pot heat the orange and apple juice, the vinegar, the salt, pepper and garlic. During those 2 minutes heat a pan and melt the butter in it, when hot add the onions and broil them for 1 minute, add the apple and let simmer for 30 seconds.

Now pour the onion apple mixture in the big pot and add the cabbage. Bring to broil over medium heat, then reduce to low, cover, and simmer until the cabbage is tender.
