not many of you know it but I injured my knee 10 weeks ago. I had to put my Chicago marathon goal for this year on ice. I tried to run one more time before I deferred it but I was in a lot of pain and hard to walk after. I know when my injury is better next year I will come back better and stronger than I was this year.
Right after that I started to put on some lbs I lost before thru running. Normally I have no problems adjusting but it was hard to give up all the carbs I ate when I was running. Just imagine going from eating 2500-3000 calories a day to only be able to eat 1500-1800 calories a day. For me that was really hard to do and it took me a while but than I found something that really helped me.
I saw a commercial on TV for beachbody. Back home in Austria my family already had some of their workout programs but those weren´t the ones I was looking for. I ended up ordering the 21 day fix program . Before I start my review I want to give you a short heads up. I´m not a beachbody coach and this is not sponseerd by anyone. I´m just a nanny that doesn´t want to gain all the pounds back she lost back 6 years ago. I want to still fit into my clothes back home in Austria when I go home from being 2 years in the US. – here is my 21 day fix review!
For me it was important that it is not a diet and more of a lifestyle change. I didn´t wanted to cut out anything and enjoy food. With the 21 day fix program you are allowed to eat everything from carbs to fat as long as it fits into a colored container. Yes you heard right – colored container, the package you get includes 7 containers (fruits, vegetables, protein, carbs, healthy fats, dressings and seeds/nuts). Besides the containers there is a recipe book and workout dvd´s. The workout program is for 7 days and 30 minutes each day which you do 3 times to make it to 21 days.
Beachbody gives you a formula to calculate the calories you should take in and it tells you how much containers you can eat a day. No measuring with a scale and no calorie counting needed. Just fill your cups and you are good to go.
After deciding I will start the program together with a friend the meal planning and organizing did start. After I did read the recipe book I knew I had to find more recipes with more ingredients. I turned to pinterest to find more recipes and created my own 21 day fix board. I found a lot of inspiration and went to work to create my own meal plan, than to make a grocery list and go shopping. Preparing the meals afterwards was the easiest part because I could cook 3-5 meals at once and freeze what ever I didn´t feel like eating. I made sure to cook enough for 1 week and a little more because you never know.
When doing this program I really recommend to meal plan and cook ahead of time. This makes the whole thing way easier and you don´t have to stress yourself about every day. I tried to stick to containers as much as possible, I would say I ate “healthy” 90% of the time the rest I couldn´t really predict because of birthdays and restaurant visits but I always made sure to pick the healthier dish.
The easiest part was sticking to the workouts because they are only 30 minutes long it was easy to include them in my busy schedule as a nanny. I could do them in the morning when the kids were in school or when the had playdates at a friends house. The first week was butt kicking, I definitely had my I´m not sitting down all day moments or did you ever try to get up with sore legs from the floor. No, me neither. As I progressed, I noticed a big difference in my strength and I had more endurance. I also loved about it that you only need 2 set of weights, light and heavy ones. I had no weights on hand and I used water bottles and milk cans instead.
When I finished my first 21 days I had lost a total of 5lbs and 4 inches. For some this might be small or not enough but for me this was great and I loved to see the difference in the before and after pictures (sorry guys but not comfortable sharing the before pictures).
Since I finished my first 21 days I kept going with the workouts and I still use the recipes from the book and from pinterest but I´m not measuring everything anymore but I still keep my weight down and I even managed to lose another 3lbs since than. I didn´t take any measurements since than but I will soon.
Al in all this was really fun and both me and my friend loved it. We tried new recipes and some new fitness moves we would have never thought about. It was always interesting and it kept us on our feet. We both feel way more energized than before and still have a love hate relationship with burpees.
PS.: Due to my knee injury I modified some of the movements but still saw great results.
Next week I will share some of my favorite meals with you and give you some tips on how to stick to them.
