only a short car ride from Essex County or a short 15 minute Ferry ride from Manhattan away is the liberty state park, one of my favorite spots to relax and calm down after a stressful week. I have been there in every circumstance I believe, sunshine, wind, rain and cold but nothing can take away from that beauty. When I sit down on a bench and watch the waves and listen to the ocean it is an instant relief.
The park is located in Jersey City, NJ right on the opposite side of Ellis Island and the statue of Liberty. It is surrounded on 3 sides by water, which is perfect for the Ferry rides to Manhattan as well as touristy rides are offered to Ellis Island and Liberty Island. This park has a huge green area, with space for activities such as walking, running and cycling, as well as picnic and BBQ. From here I had one the best views of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty.
The southeastern corner, where I always start my adventures, is home to a playground, picnic area and a bike rental station as well as the park office and the flag plaza. Halfway to the old Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal is a bridge that connects the main land with Ellis Island but is only open for authorized vehicles. When you passed the bridge it is only a short walk to the Railroad terminal, which was opened from 1892 till 1954, the state cruises and the “Empty Sky” 9/11 memorial, the official State of New Jersey’s Memorial that honors the memory of the 749 people that lived in or had ties to New Jersey that lost their lives at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The memorial gives you a direct view to the now empty spot were the world trade centers were standing.
A little set back from the railroad terminal is the Liberty house restaurant. I never been there but so far I only have heard good things about it and maybe before I go home I will treat myself to something yummy there. If you pass the restaurant and keep following the street you will reach the Liberty science center. This center is here to teach kids new things as well as learn them something about life. So far I have never been to it but I planed to go and visit this weekend.
