Here is 10 things to do in Newport!
If you are in Newport during the Summer take the time to watch one of the Beach Polo games. This is something I never expected to see in such a small town as this one but one day I went their and was surprised how amazing it is and the feeling of being their.
One of the many things that are well known but still something special to see, The Cliff Walk. It is a public access walk that leads along the shore line and brings you to many of the amazing mansions. Some parts of this walk are oaved and some are still in the rural condition they were made meaning they are rocky or sandy. I took the walk with some friends and it was a unique experience because I didn´t know where to lok first, the mansions, the ocean or just watch all the animals.
Newport is also known as the sailing capital of the US. I always prefered a traditional sailing boat over a modern ship to shipper into the sunset but this is everybodys own choice. If you want to take sailing lessons you can find companies who offer them at the Fort Adams State Park. The companies have different routes, which are based on either the mansions, the seals, the lighthouse or just cruise around.
Newport International Boat Show Four days and fifteen acres of more than 750 new powerboats and sailboats create this largest in-water boat show in the northeast.
Make history come alive when visiting the Fort Adams Trust, the largest coastal fortification in the United States. I had a great time visiting this engineering and architectural masterpiece, to see how the soldiers lived, explored the tunnel system and climbed up the stairs to the bastions for breathtaking views. It was a little fresh that day but the unique moments in the fort made me forget the wind. I took the guided tour which was only 12$ but if you decide to self guide it is only half the priece.
In July the small part of Rhode Island has the famous Newport Folk Festival which was visited by Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Pete Seeger and many more years ago. More recent it was visited by the Lumineers and the Avett Brothers. It takes place at Fort Adams State Park overlooking the Harbor.
Grab your chance and tour one of the many mansions they are open to the public. I only did the Breakers because it was THE one everybody talked about. I was in it after we´ve seen the Fort Adams Trust. It was right in time because when we entered it started raining in Newport and we were safe inside. The entrance fee is quiet low for a mansion like this and for something special as well only 20$ and you can also buy them online. The breakers offers great tours with or without tour guide but with a radio guide.
Use the Green Animals Topiary Garden as a picture backdrop and enjoy the topiary menangerie with a lion, an elephant and a bear. It is the odlest garden like this in North America and was owend by a family until the ealiy 1970´s. Since then it is property of the Preservation Society of Newport County.
Pay a visit for lunch or a drink to the Castle Hill Inn, the neighboring hammersmith Farm John F. Kennedy and Jackie-O were married. I only have been their for the drinks and small plates at the Lawn and it was worth every penny I paied. I could kick back in one of the many Adirondack chairs and enjoy a panoramic view of the ocean.
Stay in a real Lighthouse and enjoy the duties of a Keeper for a single night or a week. The Rose Island Lighthouse in the middle of the harbor offers you all that. It has a total of 6 bedrooms and you can book all of them. You have to take the boat to reach it and if you choose to be a keeper make sure you know what you are getting into with all the tasks. But the view is more than worth it!
At the end wander Thames Street and Downtown Newport. It has many little shops to pick up little souvenirs. Oh, and so many yummi ice cream or fudge shops. One of my favourite places downtown was the Newports Sea Foam Trading Co. their soaps are awesome and smell so good. And please please please visit the Cookie Jar an awesome littel shop with the best cookies in town.
