If you had told me a couple of years ago that in the future I will run 5k and 10k´s and enjoy them, I might have asked you if everything is alright with you.
Everything did start with me discovering walking for me. Almost a year after that walking wasn´t enough for me anymore and I decided to try out running. Back then the big difference was that I wanted to be one of those “skinny” women and so I did start to run 5k´s twice a month.
I felt to good to work with a plan and to be honest I thought I knew everything better but at the end I maintained on one level and never grew stronger. I had no ambition to get better and faster because my only goal was to be skinny.
Everything changed with a simple question from a friend. In 2013 she asked me if I want to run in a relay with her and her co-workers. My first reactions was, no way, nah not me. I´m just not the super duper speedy person.
Even after telling her at first no, the idea was stuck in my head and so after a little while I called her and told her I will run the Vienna city marathon relay in April 2014 with her.
But it took me an awefull long time to decide if I want to run 9k or 11k and even more time to get ambitious and start running more.
So I made the decision to attend a running group in Vienna to train for that special event. From that day on I did attend the runs twice a week and I learn so much from the leader and the others and about myself. I made friends for life within the group.
On the day of the Marathon it was cold, wet and windy but I was ready for it. At the end I did finish in just under 1 hour of time. (00:59:35 h for 9k) After that I was on a runners high and I was hooked. I think it was the day after that I signed up for 2 more runs in the next couple of months. One was a 6k (00:35:29) and the other one was a 10k (01:02:45) and my dad was cheering for me on that one. I felt amazing having my dad their.
After that life got in the way and I got lazier and lazier and after all I ended up leaving Austria earlier than planned. In February 2015 I stepped on US ground again and I made it to my goal to run an official race for every month I´m in the US.
I know now that if that change had never happened I would have stopped working out at all. I wasn´t even 1 week in the Los Angeles, when I already had signed up with a gym. I went to the gym 6 days a week and I did run on 3 days besides that I also went on hikes with girls I met in LA.
To fulfill my goal I signed up for the Hollywood walk of fame 5k (00:30:47) and it was by far the most unique experience until then. That I met my goal of running a 5k in 30 min made my desire for more just grow stronger.
5k´s and 10k´s are my favourite run!
Due to a move to the east coast and having way fewer runs over here I only did attend 5 other runs so far. Two of them being fun runs, the color run #weshine and the bubble run.
I always wanted to have a special 4th of July in the US and what better option then running a 5k in the morning. The stars and stripes 5k it was (00:35:46) and after I enjoyed the parades and fireworks. I also wanted to a run that was fun and serious at the same time, that was the chance for the Disco Fever 5k (00:37:17) to prove it.
The most important run for myself was the Wings for life world run so far, this is a run where the starter money goes 100% to the research for spinal injuries and the organizer Red Bull is from Austria, so I kinda felt like someone has to represent Austria in California.
There is also a 2nd part which one is very special and that is that there is no finish line. What? Yes you did read right, no finish line. There is a catcher car which starts 30 minutes after you and will catch you sooner or later. It did catch me after 01:20:21 h and after all I ran 12,32 km.
You might have wondered why 2 of my runs were so slow and no it was not because I did quit running or so. Nope a friend of mine decided she wants to go from walking 5k´s to running them and for me it was more important to have a good time with her then having a better time. I knew I could beat my old time from 30 minutes but I just hate to leave friends behind and so I tried to pass on what I had to learn once. We started together so we will finish together.
A couple of minutes ago I signed up for the wings for life run 2016 but this time in Sunrise, Florida and my goal is it to run farther than in 2015. But that isn´t my main goal for next year, my goal is it to run a Half Marathon in under 02:20:00 and guess what, I´m already in training for it.
Still, a long way to go but without the effort and the goal you will never succeed. For now I´m deciding on which Half I want to run.
